Oceanographer Walter Munk Honored

Renowned oceanographer and former Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor Walter Munk was recognized by San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price.

La Jolla resident and renowned oceanographer Walter Munk received a formal County of San Diego proclamation last week from Supervisor Pam Slater-Price.

Munk received a Ph.D. in oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1947 and spent his entire career at Scripps.  He advanced from a position of professor to a member of UC’s Institute of Geophysics. His studies focused on the tides, ocean swells and the tracking of long-term changes in climate associated with global warming.

“Dr. Munk was among the first to show that what happens in the ocean affects the entire planet,” Slater-Price said in a release. “We are privileged to have him working in our midst.”
