Hot Weekend Picks

Leftovers, football and theater picks for the weekend.

Thanksgiving is behind us. The only thing left to remind us of the feast with family is a fridge full of Tupperware. Hopefully you have a four-day weekend to gobble up those leftovers. There are still more reasons to be thankful, though, this holiday weekend: football, animated shorts and the arts.

Friday: Thanksgiving weekend should be full of food, naps and football. La Jolla Country Day (8-3) will visit third-seeded Francis Parker (4-6) for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Parker knocked the Torreys out of the playoffs in last year's Division V semifinal game, 42-14. Also in the quarterfinals, unbeaten Bishop's (10-0) hosts Holtville (7-4) at La Jolla High School. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: With opening week behind us, it is the perfect time to head over to Mandell Weiss Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse for Ruined.

Theater and performing arts guru Pat Launer said Ruined manages to bring the distant jungles of equatorial Africa into our midst, scorching them into our minds and hearts. Launer said the story is set in a small mining town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the edge of the Ituri rainforest. The indomitable Mama Nadi, a fierce and apolitical businesswoman, runs a bar/canteen/brothel that serves as a refuge for soldiers, salesman, rebels and 10 brutalized females. Their horrific stories were based on interviews the playwright conducted with survivors, repeatedly raped women whose numbers have continued to rise since the war's official end in 2003.

Show times this weekend are 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $31-$66 and are available at 858-550-1010 or at the La Jolla Playhouse's website.

Mellow Manor Productions presents Spike & Mike's San Diego Festival of Animation at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. This is the last weekend of the festival of animated short films that started in mid-October.

The Sundance Film Festival, Cannes International Film Festival and San Diego Comic-Con have hosted Spike and Mike shows over the past years.

Spike and Mike produced the first two Beavis and Butthead shorts long before the characters debuted on MTV, according to spikeandmike.com. Spike and Mike also premiered Spirit of Christmas, the original uncensored South Park short by Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Shows are Saturday at 7:15 and 9:15 p.m. and Sunday at 4 and 6 p.m.

For tickets call 858-459-8707, e-mail spike@spikeandmike.com or stop by the box office one hour before the first show time daily.
