High School Students Complete Multicultural Journalism Workshop

Students from San Diego and Riverside counties were part of the 30th annual workshop in Point Loma. They also were honored by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Nearly 20 high school juniors and seniors have completed a rigorous journalism training program where they learned to create their own newspaper and produce their own news broadcast, which will air at 5 p.m. Sunday on NBC-7.

The eight-day program, sponsored by the California Chicano News Media Association and hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University, is in its 30th year, a milestone that San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox, who represents Coronado and the South Bay, noted Tuesday.

Organizers and students received a proclamation declaring Tuesday “San Diego Multicultural Journalism Workshop Day” throughout the county.

Professional journalists from print, broadcast and online media organizations, in addition to local universities, volunteer at the event, training the students how to report, write and edit the news.

All expenses were paid for the students, three of whom received scholarships for excellence shown during the workshop.
