I feel very sad for this family and their loss of such a young life. My husband and I have purchased items from Craigslist, however we always meet in a public area. We have met people in a grocery store parking lot, in the parking lot of the police station, and even a Walmart lot. These places have cameras. Please be safe and take all precautions. while there are people who are crazy about craigslist it is still a place used to attract people into illegal and/or dangerous situations. i received some checks by accident (my bank, someone else's account) when i looked up the people they were written to on craigslist they proved to be whores who advertised with nude pictures of themselves and their 'merchandise'.
i am not a prude, but with the constant flaps in the media about cleaning up the internet why can't the authorities in each jurisdiction where craigslist contains whores, etc. advertisements that contravene local codes/laws take action? if they can arrest hookers on the street they can arrest locals with ads on craigslist.

My heart goes out to the needless and tragic death of an innocent young man and the emotional loss to his family (& probably material loss in lost income) and girlfriend and others who loved him. Goes to show guns are not necessarily used to shoot animals and bad guys...why do 17-year olds possess guns in San Diego? Now my taxes will go up by another $500,000 (or more) to try and incarcerate these depraved young men. Probably also ruined the lives of those close to these idiots.

This is so sad and scary. I literally just got home from a Craigslist transaction. I bought a beautiful Thomas Kinkade picture, and we emailed about meeting, met at a restaraunt right off the highway exit, I took my husband and kids with me, she had her kids with her. We spoke for less than 5 mins, made the transaction, and went on our way. It was so sad to see this story as I got home from doing the same thing this poor young man was thinking he was doing. How sad that this world has gone so bad. We have to be so careful these days, and protect our children from all the sick and crazy people in the world. Takes all kinds to make a race look bad; a note here of an encounter when I was turning off of a street to go into a parking lot next to a city building; the drive through was taken up on both sides by a SUV with a black family inside and two on the outside talking and laughing and talking some more. They would not move to let me pass. Instead they just continued to carry on their conversations noting my appearance with no consideration whatsoever. I waited for several minutes as cars whizzed past me and finally had to back up and go into another opening into this parking lot. They were still in that space when I finally got into a parking space. So much for the racism theories that race is not a factor. I believe they were just as racist when they saw i was a white 70 year old woman. Either that was the reason or they were just plain so full of themselves and to hang with anyone else.

Never ever meet at someone's home or have them come to your home. Go to a very populated area and meet. This poor child didn't have enough sense to know what he was getting into wasn't safe. Very sad that this young person with a promising future died so young, but if you are buying something off of Craigslist, at least meet at a place where there is lots of people around like a coffee shop or a shopping mall. That way if someone pulls a gun on you or tries to rob you, there will be lots of witnesses.

I'm surely much older than those that posted previous comments, but my view on Craigs List goes with those that wonder why Craigs List attracts this type of viewer. There are other sites where you sell, buy and look at opportunities in to employment and they don't have this rep. There have MANY incidents that go back to Craigs List, more than just a few have ended in death. If this were a business establishment in a city or state, they would long ago have been closed down. We considered using Criagslist when we decided to sell our home. Because of the down real estate market, we are already selling at a substantial loss, so we had hoped to avoid the real estate commission which will cost us another $16,000+ at settlement. However, when we considered the dangers of allowing strangers into our home and risking the type of situation described in this article, we decided that out safety and security were more important than the extra money. We are comfortable with our decision, and it's kind of nice to have someone else taking care of the showings, the advertising, and the open houses. The wider exposure they are giving our property through the MLS and magazine ads, etc. will also help us to sell faster, get a better price for our home than we would have gotten on our own, and get the contract work done more professionally and expeditiously. More importantly, we are not risking our lives and safety by opening our doors to strangers off the street.

It's not being racist when people are identified by their names. There is nothing wrong with that. The Irish have their Irish names, Middle easterners have their unique names; so what is so bad about identifying blacks by the unusual names they choose to use. There's a trial going on right now that is supposed to become the new "trial of the century" because the crime was worse than the one already labelled that, in which I would pay for a trip down there to pull the switch, but no, we must give this murderer her "rights" and give her a chance to get away with it.

WHen the boy recovered and was released form the hospital he was removed from school and called an instigator.. WTF is that? Its Bullshit thats what... the boy that was almost killed was black and a good student.. the football players where (a bunch of punk racist shitheads who's parents had money) . This was a premeditated and a thought out crime. All three of them new what could happen when a gun is involved. In my opinion the shooter should get the death penalty. No Question asked or anwsered. Move him to the head of the line. The others should serve atleast 85 yrs. in prison. No parole or probation. Also it should be under hard labor. Make them work . With all proceeds going to the family of the murdered boy. Any money sent them by family or friends should be collected and forwarded to the family. A person who is killed is not the only one hurt in the crime. For that matter any crime committed on another person affects everyone that person know or has any contact with. It is time to hold people responsible for what they do.

The kids are blacks. I've seen a photo of them in court. The shooter should get the death penalty and the other two should get life, without the possibility of parole. If they are this violent this young, they can't be rehabbed. Their parents failed them. I SO wish in this country that parents were charged for the crimes of their under-aged kids. Everyone must be careful with all computer usage. You don't know who you are dealing with. Although I have had hundreds of work related (cleaning, landscaping) interactions on craigslist, and every case resulted in both(myself and the employer) pleased with the deal.

This is another sad story in our country; teens killing without discretion. One of the contributing factors to youth killings is:
1. Men in this country have allowed themselves to plant the seed, leave the woman and the young boy grows up not know what "a real man is." As this continues across America, the adult males in this country continue to stay away from volunteering their time to teach and mentor young boys. If we as Black men continue to do nothing to mentor these young ones, we share in their demise and the continued incarceration of our youth. The demise of the American family rests squarely on the shoulders of American men.
We Black men will gather in great numbers to bar-b-que, watch sporting events, go to the club etc. Yet we refuse to spend time in the thousands of schools to mentor these young men.
In my opinion, we are failing our country and contributing to the livelihood and profitability of the Industrial Prison Complex.

You dont hear about these crimes from Ebay, Im sure they have their own problems neither is perfect but there is no reason to have to meet up with a total stranger anywhere when you can just ship most things and if its a car, there are way to ship that too and just split the cost of doing it. The cost of shipping is well worth your life. I rather pay money to get it shipped than risk walking into a trap like this. I rather ebay anyday before going thru craigslist.

So three young men have just thrown their lives away and one young fellow has innocently lost his. As a society we need to punish the wrongdoing and, at the same time, look for ways for these youngsters to turn their lives around. A life in prison accomplishes absolutely nothing beneficial. No course of action will restore the life that was taken so punishment is due under any circumstance. However, there's time to rehabilitate these boys and make them productive if they are willing to adjust and learn from mistakes. If not, we can not have people running about recklessly doing these kinds of things. Everyone knows that prison is a very wasteful place to spend your "life".

This week, James troutman 24, raped and murdered 9 year old Skyler Kauffman; returned home showered, and ate dinner with his fiancée.
A few years ago, a man posing as a boat buyer, killed the Newport beach, ca, couple who owned the boat, then threw their bodies overboard. In each case these guys were not black.

The kids that killed this young man were 17, one year younger than the man they swindled and ultimately killed. So many studies have been done on the rate of recidivism that I see no purpose in putting these boys in prison for life. What's the point. I don't own a gun and don't believe there is enough gun control in this country. It is way too easy for people to buy a gun and if the story reveals that these boys purchased the gun at a legal store, I'm sure you will find that this is the not the first run in with the law that these boys had and who knows if they've been involved in and got away with murder prior to this incident. I don't believe in an "eye for an eye" but I don't want to pay to house them in prison. It would be benevolent to all mankind, the parents of this college student, his girlfriend, and the neighboring community to see these three boys be put to death. What is the sense in having a trial and having these boys each get a state paid public defendant who will only present us with mitigating circumstances, turn the tables on the victim instead of the criminals they defend, and so on and so on. It used to be that there were safe havens to live in the this country. One isn't safe anywhere they go now. Enough is enough. Take this mother out of the added misery of having to hear about these kids in the media for weeks on end until the next gruesome attack takes center stage in the front pages.

The death penalty is a present for these guys. Letting them dwell in prison for the rest of their life, to live with the guilt and live in the depths of sheer misery... is a far worse punishment then death. At least maybe in prison, they have to time to find Jesus and fill their souls with light, so they have a chance to go to heaven. It's not our job to play God, it's our job to make sure their life is taken away, in a way that they will dwell in misery for 80 years. To all who are listening, from first hand experience these boys that do know right from wrong, will only end up receiving about 5 yrs. in prision. Not one person in California gets the death penalty. I had a best friend, he was a lawyer, he was killed in cold blood by his exgirlfriend. Lawyers fought hard for him in court. She got 10 years, 5 with good behavior, for a premeditated, revengeful, murder. In the year and a half of following this case, I educated myself on other murder cases in the state of California. I learned that because of the overcrowding of our jails, and the out cry of profiling of who ends up in our jails, and the rights of criminals regarding letheal injections, the CA judges are trying to rectify things by only giving very light sentences to ALL CRIMES. The jury wanted the exgirlfriend to get 30 years, and at first the prosecution team was pretty happy with that determination. The judge overruled the jury's decision and gave her 10 yrs. 5 with good behavior.
If you look around at other decisions that are very extreme crimes no matter what the jury gives as a verdict and really try to punish and set an example to criminals, now, all judges overrule and give 10 yrs. to 5 yrs. because they can. Follow this Craigslist trail. They will also only get 10 yrs. at the most. Sorry but our judicial system is dysfunctional also.

My kids had to all pay for school. They get the job or the promotion before a white person because if they don't, they cry racism. We have rewarded them for doing nothing. There's a lot of criticism in the comments about the murder suspects being black. The problem is that several generalities keep staring us in the face. First, there is something seriously wrong with Craigslist. Over and over we hear about serious crimes connected with the website. Second, where there's smoke, there's fire, and black Americans of sub-Saharan descent seem to blow a lot of smoke. Most of it comes in the form of violence and racism. When you look at OJ Simpson and Al Sharpton, you see two popular characters who are representative of the problem. Given the enormous expense and involvement that goes in to murder trials, and here there would be three of them, I think they should make a change to the law as it applies to pleading. I think they should add 10 years to the sentence of anyone who pleads "innocent" and is found to be guilty. This way, there would be a big incentive for truly guilty people to plead guilty and in this case, for those who didn't fire the weapon, and who may get lesser charges of robbery, etc, to finger the one who did, and save time and money.

I had a distant relative killed by a group of young violent men while with he was with his girlfriend downtown, at night. My male relative was in his early twenties. He and his girlfriend were leaving a concert and while walking to reach their vehicle, were approached by a gang. He died protecting his girlfriend from sexual assault by this group of young men. The group of young men beat him to death; I believe there was a lot of head trauma involved with his fatal injury. Like the story above, his girlfriend witnessed him being killed. I never heard that the murderers were found. I was so saddened by my distant relative's account and I am saddened by this account. Innocent young lives being taken by those who are driven by greed, lust, and violence with no thought to human life and others' suffering.

One night at 3:30AM I went to meet a guy who was selling a laptop for $100. He said he needed the extra money to bail his brother out of jail. I went to an ATM and got out $100. I met the guy at the said place. I then dropped him off at a house in a cul-de-sac. I was worried. But nothing happened to me! Of course I hauled ass from the place. The next day a former police officer told me that I had been in a very dangerous part of town. He said that it's even dangerous during the day! I MADE IT OUT ALIVE!

Another valid reason for our 2nd Amendment rights to bear arms! I dislike Craigslist just because of the crime it attracts. I have sold things on it, and I had two bad deals with it. People coming to my driveway and trying to get me down on my price, getting violent, and cursing me out. I'm lucky I didn't get shot! Have they, like me, become so hardened and callous reading stories about gun related and violent deaths, that, as they say, we would all be better if we were all armed? I though, don't want to walk around with a gun in my knapsack. It'll never happen, and I have been pistil whipped and also witnessed, on the same occasion, the murder of my partner. A gun would have not helped me at all in that situation, except probably get me killed, as well. Now TX wants to allow its colleges and universities to permit its students to arm themselves. I see tragedy coming forth from this blunder. Why do we in the US have so many homicides? What has happened? Where is Europe, nations that, yes, have a lower population, but per capita, have less than 10% of the murders we have? Why? I agree, Craigslist, like life, needs to be used with caution. But Craigslist is not the villain here. I use craigslist frequently and it is an awesome way of selling things that are not so easy to ship, like furniture or firewood. Ebay has its own ways of verifying identity of buyers and sellers. Perhaps Craigslist should at least take a few steps towards user verification, and mybe use a feedback system? However no matter what you do, bad people will still find ways to hurt or kill. Someone made the comment about Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson not being there because they only stand up for blacks. That's not entirely true, if they think thay can get publicity or a check out of it, they will be there. Also since this planned & calculated murder was performed by a gang, why not treat the gang as terrorists? they should hunt down the leaders of this gang and shoot them in the head like they did UBL and put their porn collection up for sale on Craigslist. Don't focus on "Craigslist" when the focus should be on crime and lack of punishment. To be factual, I have used Craigslist about 10 times to sell items that I no longer needed. I had good experiences on each occasion. I was careful to screen the offers and meet with the prospective buyers in the parking lot of the hotel where I work in daylight. I also asked for cash and was never turned down. I even had a marker pen to check the bills for counterfeit currency. As with anything related to the internet there are scammers out there but don't consider all people to be like these thugs. Just be smart.

THINK ABOUT IT - its an unfortunate fact - no racism involved - percentage wise the minorities have the most criminals,
murderers, rapists, theives, violent muggers. The major part of the US prison population is minoroities. Think about this also

Everyday now I am hearing more shootings and robberies than ever before. It is so unfortunate that there is one in every neighborhood that has it on their mind. Half of the time they never get caught like the Dodger Stadium attack. My heart goes out to these families that have no closure.

After reading the article, have a guess what the defense for these 3 loons will probably be. They didn't shoot at the girlfriend, so an attorney will try the "They only meant to scare'em, not kill or even hurt either the deceased or young lady with him".
Since there's a very credible eye-witness to everything, the Craig's List posting, robbery, onto the chase to obtain a Lic# & finally, this is the biggie, she can probably point out who actually shot the victim. She can likely ID all 3 of them & on the witness stand the horror of her story will sway any jury of the defendants guilt.

What happened to the photos of Garrett?

I did know this young man, yet my heart aches for a young life cut short, his family who will never resolve the trauma, yet hopefully will learn to endure the pain and survive it as intact as possible. His Mother will be in my prayers. I lived in La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. La Jolla truly lived to it's name, "The Jewel". It was a town of incredible wealth and extravagance. These kids who took Garret Berli's life will pay, and money will not help them now, I hope. My prayers will also be for his girlfriend who must be so traumatisized. I have lost loved ones much too young and advise all close to Garret get professional assistance to get through this. Justice will be served. Garret is an Angel and will watch his loved ones.

I went t high school with Garrett he was a year younger then me. He was the most caring, goofy, and wonderful person. I still can't believe he is gone. Although we only talked once in a while, it didn't matter his personality was something you could never pass by. I hope you people stop making this about what todo with these murders and make this about Garrett. This world has lost another great soul. Why is the La Jolla Patch failing to provide a physical description of the alleged murderers? The rest of us have a right to be protected from people who would commit murder. Thus all news media have a responsibility to report a physical description of alleged murderers ... so we know whom to avoid.

CL may have their problems, but you can't blame this on them. This is the fault of three stupid and evil teenagers, not CL. It's sad because a lot of families are going to suffer because of this. Not only the victims, but the families of the defendants will also have to suffer. It's really such a shame. In my martial arts class they teach us the three R's. Regain your senses when attacked, react to the situation, then as soon as possible run away. Don't stay and fight. Another thing they always tell us is don't attempt to disarm someone with a gun. Just give them whatever they want. If even martial arts masters are telling you that then I'd say it's damn good advice. The money or property stolen can be replaced. Your life can't. If this victim had just called the police they could easily have gotten the IP address off of the CL posting leading straight to the criminals doors. He didn't have to worry so much about a license plate and if he was he shouldn't have followed them to a cul de sac. I mean that's a dead end, no escape. But we're talking about a probably not very street wise 18 year old kid who tried to do the right thing based on what he knew. It's a shame that he lost his life over this. Living in NYC you hear stories similar to this all the time. Some people become indifferent. Personally I think it's horrible. Hopefully the ADA and DA will throw the book at them. The ball is in their court now to prove their case. If they fail they're idiots. Even I could win this.
